Vintage Buttons

Morning all! I hope you are enjoying the Bank Holiday weekend :)

Here are a small sample of the latest buttons added to Love Buttons HQ...

This first assortment contains lots of pretty vintage flower-style buttons. They look lovely added as small clusters to handmade bags, purses, sachets, cushions etc. This assortment is now sold - sorry!  I have another assortment in darker colours available here.

This amazing and collectable button dates from circa 1960s/1970s. It is highly sculpted from translucent brown plastic. French couturier buttons are generally produced as a 'cottage industry' in small quantities for the couture dress trade or commercial market. The designs are sculpted by hand in soft plastic using a hot tool. This particular piece was part of the stock of a French gentleman who used to sell these buttons in a market in France over 30 years ago. This buttons costs £10.

Finally, a beautiful pressed glass button, in the style of Bimini (although not made by that company). The button is roughly oval in shape, with a pattern of raised ridges along the centre (rather like a toast rack). The reverse is coated with gold lustre and has a brass plate with loop shank. This button costs £3.50.

Latest Button Finds

Morning all! Hope you are having better weather than us: it is heavy rain and grey skies here :(

Here are the latest buttons to inspire your sewing, knitting and craft projects:-

These lovely ceramic (porcelain) buttons are made by Nicky of Njoy. They are realistic flower shapes with a subtle glaze of pinky brown. They cost £2.65 for eight buttons.

These unusual buttons are made entirely from plastic to imitate an antler base mounted with metal escutcheon. The motif on the front is an acorn with oak leaves. They are thought to date to the late 20th century. The buttons cost £5.00 for seven buttons.

These metal buttons with paperweight glass centres are something for the collectors. The glass centrepieces have a bed of what looks like chips of shell (Mother-of-Pearl) surmounted by a glass latticework in green or black, decorated with glitter. A clear glass dome protects the decorative base. The metalwork is two-piece with an inserted loop shank. They probably date to the late 19th century. The buttons cost $30.00 for five buttons. (Approx £19.00).

Bars & Stripes - Quilted Wall Hanging

"Bars and Stripes" is an original piece of textile art work, entirely hand sewn. This wall hanging is made from a variety of cotton (one or two cotton mix) fabrics. The textiles used include repurposed (laundered) clothing, as well as some new fabrics.

The fabrics are cut and pieced, then quilted with a thin wadding and backing fabric. A sleeve is added to the reverse with a baton of wood for hanging. The wall hanging is tea dyed in hot water to give it an aged and wrinkled appearance.

The piece measures approx 21 1/2" (54.5 cm) wide, and 27 1/2" (70 cm) high.

The inspiration for this piece came from seeing the wonderful quilts of the Gees Bend community. I immediately grabbed some paper and started cutting and arranging irregular strips of paper to come up with my own design. Then I chose fabrics and colors to give a deliberately asymmetrical and 'improvised' look and feel to the piece. The wall hanging costs $175 from Fire Horse Textiles.

Antique metal buttons ideal for restoring

These old buttons have lost there sparkle, most collectors may dismiss these buttons but i'm sure there are Artisans out there that can restore upcycle these buttons. They have rust spots, verdigris and look very dull.
So is there anyone out there who would like a challenge.

Launch of New LittleBarb Online Shops!

Fans of LittleBarb's range of fabulous and unique button jewellery will be delighted to know that Barbara has opened two new shops in addition to her original Folksy shop: LittleBarb on Etsy and LittleBarb.co.uk

Barbara says "On my site you will find necklaces made from buttons, ceramics and fabrics, often mixed together in the same piece.

Each necklace is a one-off and designed and created by LittleBarb.  I try to use vintage buttons where possible, I find the colour and finish often more interesting than modern buttons, although I do use these too."

"Fabrics range from silk to felt and the ceramic used is often porcelain, although I do use polymer clay too.  I am drawn to colour and this is often the starting point for a necklace.  I try to find colours that not only compliment each other but also those that have vibrancy because of their unusual juxtaposition.

"All in all my work is a mix of elements that interest and fascinate me.  I hope you too find them attractive too."

New, Colour-Themed Button Packs

Hello Folks! What a change in the weather! Oh well, at least it will do the garden some good :)

Here at Love Buttons HQ, I have some gorgeous new button packs in stock. They are colour-themed and would be a great gift for craft and sewing enthusiasts; or would look very pretty displayed in a glass jar while awaiting use.

The first pack is called 'Summer' and has a beautiful mix of 'fiesta' colours such as golden yellow, bright green and bright orange. These cost £7.99 for a 200g pack (approx 800 buttons - quite a lot of smaller ones in this pack).

This is the 'Spring' pack, with acid greens and citrus shades of yellow and orange; also pinks and lilacs. This 200 g pack costs £7.99 (approx 700 buttons, again quite a large percentage of smaller buttons in the mix.)

The 'Brights' pack contains more larger buttons, in jewel tones of pink, red, blue, green, yellow, purple and orange. The pack costs £7.99 for 200g. (approx 550 buttons in a pack.)

Finally, the 'Pastels' pack. This has quite a lot of larger buttons in delicate pastel shades of yellow, pink, green, lilac and peach. This pack costs £7.99 for 200g (approx 450 buttons in a pack.)

There are so many uses for the buttons in these packs, from cardmaking and scapbooking, to jewellery making, stacked flowers for bouquets, decorative wall hangings, or for adding a cluster to handmade bags, totes, purses, decorative hearts for hanging about the house, lavender bags etc etc What will you use yours for?

Cheerio for now!
